How to Satisfy NY’s New Real Estate License Renewal Requirements
NY DOS has updated their renewal requirements multiple times over the past few years. This has created a lot of confusion amongst real estate brokers and salespersons and in this post, we’re going to clear everything up.
In July 2021, NY DOS made two big updates to license renewal laws. First was removing the grandfather rule, which allowed licensees who had their real estate license for a number of years to become exempt from completing continuing ed as a requirement to renewing their real estate license. That exemption was removed, so everyone must now complete continuing ed. The second big change was the introduction of a required 1-hour continuing ed course on “Recent Legal Matters”. Here at Keep Me Certified, we produced a 1 hour course titled “Legal Update”, which is approved to satisfy that requirements. For more information on this, you can read our article titled, How to Renew a NY Real Estate License in 2021.
In September 2022, NY DOS made a few new updates, which include the addition of 3 new course topics; 2 hours on Implicit Bias, 2 hours on Cultural Competency, and 2.5 hours on Ethical Business Practices. You can read more about the latest updates in our article titled The New NY Real Estate License Renewal Requirements as of September 21, 2022.
In short summary, here are the currently required (as of September 21, 2022) course topics that must be completed as part of the 22.5 credits hours to renew a NY real estate license:
